The United States now holds nearly 328,400 BTC—around 2.8 times more than every other country combined, according to new data. Here’s what it means for the global Bitcoin market and digital asset strategy.

Key Takeaways

•The United States reportedly holds 328,372 BTC.

•U.S. Bitcoin reserves are about 2.8 times larger than the combined holdings of every other nation.

•The United Kingdom ranks second with 61,245 BTC.

•The UAE, China, and El Salvador are also among the largest sovereign Bitcoin holders.

•The growing gap highlights the U.S.’s expanding influence in the global Bitcoin ecosystem.

The United States continues to cement its position as the world’s largest sovereign Bitcoin holder, with new figures indicating that the country now owns nearly three times as much Bitcoin as every other nation combined.

According to data highlighted by River Research and BitcoinTreasuries, the U.S. currently controls approximately 328,372 BTC, representing one of the largest government-owned digital asset reserves in history. The latest figures suggest America’s Bitcoin holdings are roughly 2.8 times greater than the combined reserves of all other countries.

The data places the United Kingdom in second position with approximately 61,245 BTC, followed by the United Arab Emirates with 20,703 BTC, China with 15,000 BTC, and El Salvador with 7,653 BTC. All remaining countries combined reportedly hold just 12,485 BTC, illustrating how dominant the United States has become in sovereign Bitcoin ownership.

How Did the U.S. Build Such a Large Bitcoin Reserve?

Unlike countries that actively purchased Bitcoin in the open market, much of the U.S. government’s holdings originated from law enforcement operations. Over the past decade, federal agencies including the Department of Justice, FBI, and Internal Revenue Service have confiscated Bitcoin connected to cybercrime, darknet marketplaces, fraud investigations, and other criminal activities.

Large seizures from cases involving Silk Road, Bitfinex hackers, and various criminal enterprises significantly expanded the government’s digital asset portfolio. While portions of these assets have historically been auctioned, recent policy changes indicate that the United States is increasingly viewing Bitcoin as a strategic national asset rather than something to liquidate immediately.

Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Changes the Narrative

Earlier this year, the U.S. government announced the creation of a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, signaling a major shift in how Washington views digital assets. Instead of selling confiscated Bitcoin as it had done for years, the government has begun exploring long-term management of these holdings. Supporters argue that retaining Bitcoin could strengthen national financial resilience while positioning the country at the forefront of the rapidly evolving digital economy. This policy marks a significant departure from previous administrations, where seized cryptocurrency was generally auctioned shortly after legal proceedings concluded.

Other Countries Are Still Far Behind

Although several governments have accumulated Bitcoin, none currently approach the scale of U.S. holdings.

The United Kingdom remains a distant second, while countries such as the UAE and China maintain substantially smaller reserves. El Salvador, despite becoming the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender, owns only a fraction of America’s holdings.

Many governments continue to debate whether Bitcoin should become part of national reserves, but few have developed strategies comparable to those now emerging in the United States

Market Implications

The concentration of such a significant portion of sovereign-held Bitcoin in one country carries important implications for the broader cryptocurrency market.

Large government reserves could influence long-term supply dynamics since Bitcoin has a fixed maximum supply of 21 million coins. If governments increasingly decide to hold rather than sell their Bitcoin, the amount of BTC available on exchanges may continue to shrink.

Institutional investors also closely monitor government policies regarding Bitcoin because they can shape regulatory clarity, investor confidence, and broader adoption across financial markets. Many analysts believe sovereign Bitcoin ownership may become an increasingly important factor as countries compete to secure strategic digital assets in the years ahead.

Growing Institutional Confidence

Government accumulation comes alongside rising institutional participation.

Public companies, asset managers, pension funds, and financial institutions continue expanding their Bitcoin exposure. This combination of institutional demand and sovereign holdings reinforces Bitcoin’s transition from a speculative asset into a globally recognized strategic financial asset.

While volatility remains a defining characteristic of cryptocurrency markets, growing adoption among governments and institutions suggests Bitcoin is becoming a permanent part of the global financial landscape.

Why It Matters

The United States’ overwhelming lead in sovereign Bitcoin holdings demonstrates how digital assets are becoming part of national economic strategy. If more countries begin treating Bitcoin as a reserve asset, global competition for the limited supply could intensify, potentially reshaping financial markets and accelerating cryptocurrency adoption worldwide.
