OpenAI Enterprise Revenue Surpasses Consumer Business as Run Rate Tops $40B

OpenAI’s annualized revenue run rate has topped $40B as enterprise revenue surpasses its ChatGPT consumer business, marking a major shift in its growth strategy.

OpenAI’s Enterprise Business Overtakes ChatGPT Consumer Revenue

$40 billion is the annualized revenue run rate OpenAI has now surpassed, while its enterprise operation has reportedly overtaken the company’s ChatGPT consumer business as the larger source of revenue.

The shift marks an important change for the artificial intelligence company, which built its global brand around ChatGPT’s enormous consumer adoption but has increasingly focused on selling AI tools to businesses.

OpenAI’s finance chief Sarah Friar reportedly told investors on August 14 that enterprise revenue had moved ahead of the company’s consumer business, according to reporting based on an investor meeting and presentation materials. (Unite.AI)

The development comes only months after OpenAI said enterprise revenue represented more than 40% of its total revenue and was expected to reach parity with consumer revenue by the end of 2026. (OpenAI)

Enterprise customers are becoming an increasingly important part of OpenAI’s revenue base.

The numbers behind OpenAI’s revenue acceleration

OpenAI entered 2026 with an annualized revenue run rate above $20 billion, according to CFO Sarah Friar. The company said in January that its annualized revenue had surpassed $20 billion in 2025, up sharply from $6 billion in 2024. (Reuters)

By March, OpenAI said its latest funding round had closed with $122 billion in committed capital at an $852 billion post-money valuation.

At that point, the company said enterprise revenue already represented more than 40% of its business and was on track to reach parity with consumer revenue by the end of 2026. (OpenAI)

The latest $40 billion-plus run rate therefore represents a major acceleration from the figures disclosed earlier in the year.

The reported number is a run rate, not $40 billion of revenue already collected during 2026. It annualizes the company’s current revenue pace to illustrate the size of the business if that pace continued for a full year.

How the enterprise shift happened

OpenAI’s transformation from a consumer-first AI company into a major enterprise software provider has happened quickly.

ChatGPT initially became the company’s primary growth engine. Millions of people began using the chatbot for writing, research, coding, education and everyday tasks.

Businesses eventually followed.

OpenAI has expanded its business products, API services and coding tools while encouraging companies to deploy AI across larger portions of their operations.

In April, the company said enterprise revenue had already surpassed 40% of total revenue. OpenAI’s chief revenue officer at the time, Denise Dresser, said businesses were increasingly moving beyond individual productivity use cases toward broader company-wide AI deployment. (OpenAI)

The change is significant because enterprise customers can generate revenue through workplace seats, API consumption and large-scale AI deployments rather than individual monthly subscriptions.

July provided another major growth signal

The latest milestone follows another striking revenue update from late July.

During an internal meeting, CFO Sarah Friar reportedly told employees that OpenAI’s annualized recurring revenue in July had surpassed the revenue generated during the entire second quarter.

The company’s leadership attributed the momentum to newer models, the ChatGPT Work enterprise product and growing adoption of Codex, its AI coding tool. (Investing.com Nigeria)

That means the $40 billion figure did not emerge in isolation.

OpenAI has been reporting increasingly rapid monetization across several parts of its ecosystem, including consumer subscriptions, enterprise products, APIs, advertising and coding tools.

Who is driving the revenue?

The biggest change is the growing importance of business customers.

Enterprise clients can purchase AI at substantially larger scales than individual consumers. A company deploying AI across thousands of employees can generate significant recurring revenue through subscriptions, while developers can create large API bills by processing huge volumes of AI workloads.

OpenAI’s own April disclosure said enterprise revenue was already more than 40% of total revenue. (OpenAI)

Its consumer business, however, remains enormous.

ChatGPT has become one of the world’s most widely used AI products, giving OpenAI a massive distribution advantage. The company has said its consumer reach can also act as a pathway into workplace adoption, with people becoming familiar with AI through ChatGPT before introducing it into their professional lives. (OpenAI)

The two businesses therefore remain closely connected even as enterprise revenue becomes the larger contributor.

Analysts have highlighted the importance of revenue mix

Independent research has already pointed to the growing importance of enterprise and developer spending in the AI industry.

IDC Research Vice President Arnal Dayaratna previously noted that revenue mix can tell a different story from user numbers, particularly when comparing consumer-focused platforms with enterprise-heavy AI businesses. IDC estimated earlier in 2026 that OpenAI’s annualized revenue was between $30 billion and $40 billion, with consumer subscriptions contributing roughly $10 billion to $13 billion and API and platform activity contributing as much as $20 billion. (Benzinga)

That earlier estimate helps put the latest reported figure into context.

OpenAI is now moving beyond simply selling access to ChatGPT and increasingly monetizing AI through business workflows, software development and API usage.

Historical context: a rapid transformation

The scale of OpenAI’s growth is unusual even within the technology sector.

The company reported annualized revenue above $20 billion in 2025, compared with approximately $6 billion in 2024. (Reuters)

OpenAI subsequently said enterprise revenue had climbed beyond 40% of the business and expected it to reach roughly half of total revenue by the end of 2026. (OpenAI)

The latest crossover appears to have happened sooner than that timeline suggested.

That matters because OpenAI’s biggest challenge has never simply been attracting users. Running frontier AI models requires enormous computing infrastructure, making revenue growth critical to supporting the company’s spending.

OpenAI itself has described compute as a strategic advantage and said its business model depends on revenue funding continued investment in infrastructure and increasingly capable models. (OpenAI)

The $40 billion milestone comes with enormous costs

A larger revenue number does not automatically mean OpenAI is profitable.

The company continues to invest heavily in computing capacity, data centers, research and new AI products.

OpenAI has previously indicated that its infrastructure requirements will remain enormous, with long-term commitments involving major cloud and computing providers.

That creates a difficult equation: revenue must grow rapidly enough to offset the cost of providing increasingly powerful AI services.

Enterprise customers could help because business usage can be more predictable and potentially generate larger revenue per customer than free or low-cost consumer usage.

But enterprise AI also requires significant computing resources, meaning higher revenue can come alongside higher infrastructure costs.

What could happen next?

The next major test will be whether OpenAI can maintain its $40 billion-plus annualized pace while continuing to expand enterprise adoption.

The company will also need to prove that enterprise growth can continue without sacrificing ChatGPT’s consumer dominance.

Competition will be another major catalyst.

Anthropic, Google and other AI providers are aggressively targeting business customers, while cheaper open-weight models could pressure pricing across the industry.

OpenAI’s leadership changes will also matter. The company recently appointed Dali Rajic as chief revenue officer after Denise Dresser’s departure, adding another layer of scrutiny to its enterprise sales strategy. (Barron’s)

If enterprise revenue continues climbing while ChatGPT retains its enormous consumer audience, OpenAI could be moving toward a business model that is much broader than the chatbot that made it famous.

The $40 billion milestone is less about ChatGPT getting bigger—and more about OpenAI becoming an enterprise giant.
