India’s USDT Premium Surges Above 8.5% After Crypto Remittance Crackdown Disrupts Supply

USDT is trading at an unusually high premium in India after enforcement raids on crypto remittance firms disrupted stablecoin supply, highlighting growing regulatory pressure on the country’s digital asset market.

USDT Premium in India Climbs to Highest Level in Years

The price of Tether (USDT) in India has surged to an 8.5% premium over the official U.S. dollar exchange rate, more than double its normal 3%–4% range. The sharp increase follows recent enforcement actions against crypto remittance firms that have significantly reduced the domestic supply of the world’s largest stablecoin.

According to market data, USDT was trading at approximately ₹102.88, while the official USD/INR interbank exchange rate stood near ₹94.65, creating one of the largest pricing gaps seen in recent years.

Enforcement Directorate Raids Trigger Supply Crunch

The premium widened after India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids on six premises linked to five Bengaluru-based crypto payment and remittance companies. Authorities allege the firms facilitated more than ₹2,500 crore (around $265–300 million) in unauthorized cross-border transfers using stablecoins, primarily USDT, in violation of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). Investigators claim the companies converted Indian rupees into stablecoins, transferred them overseas through crypto networks, and bypassed traditional banking documentation required for international remittances. Bank accounts linked to the investigation were frozen as part of the operation.

Why USDT Became More Expensive

Following the raids, market makers and liquidity providers reportedly reduced imports of USDT into India due to regulatory uncertainty. With demand remaining strong and supply shrinking, buyers were forced to pay significantly higher prices for the stablecoin. USDT plays a crucial role in India’s crypto ecosystem, serving as the primary trading pair for many digital assets and as an efficient tool for international payments. The sudden shortage has therefore affected traders, exchanges, and businesses that rely on stablecoins for liquidity.

Regulatory Discussions Continue

The supply disruption comes as India continues debating its long-term approach to regulating digital assets. Reports indicate that the country’s Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance is scheduled to meet with representatives from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and other financial bodies to discuss the future regulatory framework for virtual digital assets. Industry participants argue that clearer regulations could help stabilize liquidity while reducing reliance on informal cross-border payment channels.

Why It Matters

The surge in India’s USDT premium highlights how regulatory enforcement can rapidly affect cryptocurrency liquidity and pricing. While the crackdown aims to curb unauthorized cross-border transfers, it has also created a shortage of one of the market’s most important stablecoins, driving costs higher for traders and businesses. Until supply conditions normalize or regulatory clarity improves, India’s crypto market may continue to experience elevated stablecoin premiums and reduced liquidity.

Key Takeaways

•USDT premium in India surged above 8.5%, more than double its typical 3%–4% range.

•The price spike followed Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids on crypto remittance firms accused of facilitating unauthorized cross-border transfers.

•The crackdown disrupted the domestic supply of Tether (USDT), creating a temporary shortage in India’s crypto market.

•Traders and businesses are paying significantly more for USDT as demand remains strong despite reduced liquidity.

•The incident highlights how regulatory enforcement can quickly impact stablecoin pricing and crypto market liquidity in India.

•Market participants are closely watching for regulatory clarity, which could help restore stablecoin supply and reduce premiums.
